FLYWHEEL

Flywheel=> "A flywheel is an inertial energy-storage device. It absorbs mechanical energy and serves as a reservoir, storing energy during the period when the supply of energy is more than the requirement and releases it during the period when the requirement of energy is more than the supply".

MECHANICAL GEARS IN NATURE

PREVIOUSLY IT IS BELIEVED TO BE ONLY MAN-MADE GEAR MECHANISM IS PRESENT. BUT RECENTLY A NATURAL EXAMPLE OF GEAR MECHANISM HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN A COMMON PLANT-HOPPING INSECT FOUND IN GARDENS ACROSS EUROPE.
This insect has hind-leg joints with curved cog-like strips of opposing ‘teeth’ that intermesh, rotating like mechanical gears to synchronize the animal’s legs when it launches into a jump.

Each gear tooth has a rounded corner at the point it connects to the gear strip; a feature identical to man-made gears such as bike gears – essentially a shock-absorbing mechanism to stop teeth from shearing off.

The gear teeth on the opposing hind-legs lock together like those in a car gear-box, ensuring almost complete synchronicity in leg movement - the legs always move within 30 ‘microseconds’ of each other, with one microsecond equal to a millionth of a second.

“These gears are not designed; they are evolved - representing high speed and precision machinery evolved for synchronisation in the animal world.”

UNIVERSAL JOINT

Universal joint is considered to be one of the old flexible couplings.A universal joint in its simplest form consists of two shafts yokes at right angles to each other and a four point cross which connects to the yokes. A universal joint can operate at high misalignment angles i.e upto 15 degrees, therefore it is used in for the power transmission in trucks, cars etc. There are various types of universal joints.

LATHE MACHINE

Lathe machine is a very common and useful machine.
This machine can perform  various operations like cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, turning etc on the workpiece .There are various types and sizes of lathe machine according to the type of requirement and work. The parts of all lathe machines are identical to each other with little bit difference..

EME WORKING OF A FOUR STROKE PETROL ENGINE

WORKING OF A FOUR STROKE PETROL ENGINE
In this post we will learn about the working of a four stroke petrol engine.
The working of a four stroke petrol engine is based upon the otto cycle.
A Four stroke petrol engine is consisting of four processes or strokes, i.e 1.Suction,2.Compression,3.Power and 4.exhaust.
1.Suction stroke:- Suction stroke is also called as intake stroke. In suction stroke the air and fuel mixture enters in the cylinder through inlet valve and the  piston moves from TDC to BDC.This stroke completes when the piston reaches at bottom dead centre or outer dead centre. This whole process can be shown on pv. diagram in line 1 to 2.
SUCTION STROKE
2.Compression stroke:- In compression stroke both the valves i.e intake and exhaust valves are closed.in this process the piston returns to the top of the cylinder compressing the air or fuel-air mixture into the combustion chamber of the cylinder head. During the compression stroke the temperature of the air or fuel-air mixture rises by several hundred degrees. This is shown in p.v diagram by the line from 2to3.

MECHANISM

DEFINITION:- mechanism is obtained, when one of the link of a kinematic chain is fixed. or simply when we fix a link of kinematic chain is called as mechanism.Mechanism is used to transmit the motion to various parts of the machine.
By changing the type of pairs and fixing another link may vairy or change the output by a significant value. so mechanism is very important to study.

Mechanisms are of two types:-
1.Simple
2.Compound

Mechanism is not a machine. it is just like a skeleton of a machine
A mechanism example.

TOM(Four-bar chain mechanism)

FOUR- BAR CHAIN MECHANISM:-
A four bar link mechanism or linkage is the most fundamental of the plane kinematics linkages. It is a much preferred mechanical device for the mechanization and control of motion due to its simplicity and versatility.
Fig.1.1, Four bar chain.
This type of mechanism contains all four pairs as turning pairs.
In four bar mechanism, one of the rotating link is known as crank or driver and the other link as follower or rocker. the member connecting the crank and the follower is known as connecting rod.(see fig. 1.1)

INVERSIONS OF FOUR CHAIN MECHANISM:-

1.COUPLED WHEELS OF LOCOMOTIVE:-
In coupled wheels of locomotive mechanism, links 1 and 3 works as crank(shown in the fig. 1.2) .the link 4 is fixed. The opposite links in mechanism are equal in length.Due to two cranks this mechanism is also known as double crank mechanism
Fig. 1.2 Coupled locomotive.

This type of mechanism is used in the train wheels.(as shown below)
eg. of coupled wheels of locomotive
2.BEAM ENGINE:-
Beam engine mechanism is used to convert rotary motion into reciprocating one. This mechanism is used in beam's steam engines. so it is called as beam engine mechanism.

3. PANTOGRAPH:- Pantograph is a device used to reproduce a displacement in a reduced or enlarged scale. Pantograph is used to for duplicating drawings maps etc.
The links connected in pantograph together such that, they form parallelograms. Due to this identical output of the links is obtained.

Acc. to the geometry of the fig(1.3)=  AC/AC"=AE/AE"

WATT MECHANISM:-
This mechanism is invented by watt for his steam engine to guide the piston rod.
In this mechanism the center pt. p(shown in fig 1.4.) of the linkage travel along a approximate st. line.

Watt's mechanism is used in 1998 Ford Ranger EV.(SHOWN BELOW)

Top 10 reasons-why should make mechanical Engineer

Top 10 Reasons – Why should one be a Mechanical Engineer ?

1.You get the opportunity to create something tangible and useful.Ur creations will be used by others. It gives u the greatest joy.

2.Its the broadest branch of engineering…so your career options are open even after u graduate:-
Defence,Civil services,High end R&D,Manufacturing,Design,Energy sector,Management,Entrepreneurship,Masters(ME/MS)

3.Variety to be learnt- u learn how to design and make things ranging from a Safety Pin to a Spacecraft.

4.Easy to imagine and visualize whatever u learn

5.Develop a range of skills – u learn the work of a machine operator (machinist), a smith, a foundryman, a mechanic,a plant manager,a researcher and a policy maker.

6.U work with massive machines (majestic in nature) to tiny precision instruments, micro and nano devices.
u’ll be savviest engineer.

7.Importance of ur work.U form the human resource that is required for the survival of any industry and forms the backbone of modern human life.u r the person who may generate power/energy from natural resources, make equipments and processes to mine minerals, make cars, bikes ,buses, trucks, planes, ships(transportation can be compared to human blood that transports nutrients), make machines that manufacture products ranging from food to surgical instruments to weapons, mange factories and businesses.

8.Get paid handsomely(after gaining a few years experience even if not as a fresher).

9.Not much of girls hanging around(they usually don’t prefer to opt for this course, its thought to be a manly course).U dont have to worry about getting dressed perfectly for class or for girls giggling at u for some silly or not so silly but serious reason.Ur in a man’s world. But there are a few out of the ordinary and brainy girls who do take up this course and luv it.

10.It sounds and feels nice to be called a Mechanical Engineer.
